Caroline Evans has recently prepared aural notes for the Grade 8 Piano Anthology, 2009 and 2010 published by Peters Edition in July 2008.
In the aural component of the Grade 8 practical examination, the student is expected to discuss a piece of music played by the examiner. Using the opening passages of selected examination pieces from the new piano syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, 2009 and 2010, some possible areas of discussion are suggested.
These aural notes are ordered under the acronym STRAD (Structure and form, Style and period; Tempo, Texture, Time, Tonality; Rhythm; Articulation; and Dynamics). They are designed to encourage greater musical awareness as well as provide preparation material for the listening test.
